A resale price is not your profit

Use a worked example and an adjustable calculator to see how fees and shipping change the result.

SolePredict · Published September 12, 2026 · Educational guide

Start with the full purchase cost

Record what you actually paid for the pair, including purchase tax and inbound shipping. Retail price alone can understate your cost. Then list selling expenses separately: percentage fees, any fixed charges, outbound shipping, packaging, and other transaction costs. The calculator below keeps those assumptions visible so you can change them instead of treating a headline price as take-home cash.

A worked example

Imagine a $200 total purchase cost and a $250 sale. With an illustrative 12% selling fee and $15 in other selling costs, the fee is $30, the proceeds after selling costs are $205, and the margin over your purchase cost is $5. If the sale price falls to $225, the fee becomes $27 and the margin becomes negative $17. A $25 price change erased more than the original margin.

Find the break-even price

With a fee charged as a percentage of the sale price, break-even equals total purchase cost plus fixed selling costs, divided by one minus the fee rate. In the example, $215 divided by 0.88 is about $244.32. This is a simplified model: marketplaces may charge fees on shipping or tax, impose minimum charges, or vary rates by category and seller account. Enter the terms for your transaction; the default 12% is an example, not a quoted marketplace rate.

Stress-test the number

Try a lower sale price, a higher shipping cost, and a longer holding period. The calculator does not estimate whether a sale will happen or how quickly it will happen. It also excludes income tax, returns, storage, financing costs, and your time unless you include applicable costs yourself. Keep the assumptions with your calculation so you can compare the estimate with what actually happened after a sale.

Check your margin

Estimated selling fee: $30.00

Proceeds after selling costs: $205.00

Margin before income tax: $5.00

Break-even sale price: $244.32

Illustrative inputs, not current marketplace rates. Fee applies to sale price only. Calculations stay in your browser.
